This book was required reading for a class I am taking. The authors are wonderful writers and they sound like they are even better human beings, and funny ones too. It is an easy read, but full of useful info. My only 'gripe' is that there is no index. That makes it difficult to find a reference you remember reading, but don't remember which chapter.

Everyone entering medical school, nursing school, physician assistants school or any of the other health sciences trading programs should read this before starting. Our educational programs are excellent at teaching medical knowledge, however most fall short on professionalism and interpersonal communication skills. This is an excellent primer!!!

Brilliant! I loved this book so much and got so much value out of it, I just bought the Kindle version after reading and underlining every other line in the hardcover version. As a recent cancer survivor, lifelong "perpetual patient" and customer service expert, I have experienced the good, the bad and the ugly when it comes to "patient care". This book convincingly builds the case for more compassionate care being essential to better outcomes, compliance etc, and that in the ever more competitive health "care" business, such care or its lack, will likely mean the difference between success or survival for many medical organizations. More importantly, the authors teach you, from their experience doing so, HOW to go about building a "culture" that will result in the kind of loving care patients want and need in order to remain loyal for a lifetime. NO matter what business you are in, healthcare or otherwise, read this book. LOVE your employees and they will reciprocate in kind with your customers. So simple and yet profoundly accurate and actionable. Well done!

A Solid Introduction to Bible Study

I have been on something of a quest to find the right book to use in an adult Sunday School class on biblical interpretation and application. While this book still isn't quite perfect, it stands head and shoulders above the other dozen or so books I have read on the topic in the past year. If I could assign it a more exact numerical rating, it would probably be about 4.7 out of 5.
The book is divided into 13 chapters, each ending with 2-4 exercises to allow the reader to practice the material covered in the chapter. The book is organised around an acronym, CAPTOR, which stands for Context, Analysis, Problems, Themes, Obligations, and Reflection. I'm not a big fan of mnemonic acronyms because I often remember the acronym and not what it is intended to stand for, and because adherence to an acronym sometimes necessitates choosing terms that don't exactly fit (for instance, Doriani admits that application would have been a better label than Obligations for that particular section of the book). However, many people find them far more helpful than I do, so I won't deduct any points for that.
Context is explained as both the literary and historical context. The book examines how one goes about understanding and applying each and directs readers to tools that might be helpful (e.g. bible dictionaries).
The section on analysis is divided into two chapters, one on analyzing narrative and the other on analyzing discourse (Doriani's catch all term for poetry, prophetic oracles, wisdom literature, the epistles of the new testament and so on). Initially I suspected that his attempt to abstract all non-narrative into a general category would fail, but he handles it surprisingly well. The few pages on understanding Hebrew poetry need to be greatly expanded. The author does provide several footnote references to Kugel's book for those wishing further study of that topic. One of the appendices also offers some genre specific advice for analysis.
One suspects that the chapter "Solving Problems" exists primarily to get a P into the acronym. Some good advice is offered there, but realistically the step of solving problems, which the author defines as "any term, concept, custom, or teaching that eludes our understanding" fits either into the context phase or the analysis phase depending on what sort of problem it is.
The themes chapter is good, but in my opinion spends too much time on the idea of approaching the bible with a theme in mind, e.g. "What does the bible say about marriage?" and not enough time on how to recognise the themes that are inherent in the bible (covenantal documents, the prophets as prosecutors of covenantal disobedience, &c.). This defect is remedied somewhat in the final chapter where he discusses the redemptive-historical method in the context of reflection.
The section on obligations is the best in the book. The author observes that too often, bible teachers leave their students with nothing but abstractions. He discusses how to derive an application from narrative, how to apply the commands of Scripture that no longer have direct relevance (e.g. parapets around roof tops and goring oxen), and how to derive an application from a text that is strictly theological (e.g. large sections of Paul's epistles).
In the reflection section, he attempts to bring together the previous five steps and discuss the different ways one can faithfully present the same text. That is, how does one distill one's insights about a text into a coherent message that best fits what one's listeners need to hear. Two approaches he suggests are the redemptive historical method (that is, how does this text fit into God's overall plan of redemption) and what he calls the fallen condition focus (FCF) (how does this text address the problems that are inherent in living in a fallen world?)
The imperfections in this book are mostly due to omissions of things that I think are useful. Doriani refers to many works in his endnotes that will fill in these gaps if the reader cares to pursue them. Also, the book is aimed at teachers and preachers rather than individuals. While that isn't a defect, it will mean that I have to do a bit of extra work to use it with a class of laymen.
The other problems are minor, and have more to do with the publisher than the author. For some reason, P&R chooses to use endnotes rather than footnotes - this is very disruptive when you wish to pursue one of the notes. Also, P&R never puts a bibliography in their books anymore - if you want to find the particulars on a book the author refers to, you have to dig through the endnotes to find the first reference to it. Lastly, P&R's bindings are not very good and tend to show wear very easily and very quickly. This book deserves a hardcover edition.

No need to fear Biblical interpretation if you own this book

Doriani has assembled this book with great concern for those who have not had formal Seminary or Bible college training, but who have a strong desire to be involved in the teaching ministry at the local church. I believe--as a formally trained Biblical interpreter--that this book needs to to be in the hands of all those in this category, as well as in the hands of those formally trained! Doriani has carefully communicated all the important "steps" of Biblical interpretation in a manner that is understandable and clear for lay men and women. Don't know Hebrew or Greek but desire to teach the Bible correctly? Buy this book now.

I GOT THE MESSAGE

This book is a great read and easy to understand. The book is organized wonderfully with summaries and sections so that the information is easily accessible at a later time. In addition, the CAPTOR method is easy to remember. This book is a must for any minister serious about teaching the word of God. Moreover, this is a great book for those that want to learn how to study the Bible for themselves. If you are sick and tried of shallow Bible studies and sermons this book will give you the tools you need to deepen your knowledge of the Bible and therefore your relationship with Jesus. RLT

Swoon. Sorry, slight spoiler alert if you haven't read the first book.

This is my very favorite type of story, where the two people start out in conflict and have to work though it - because it means I get to fall in love right along with them. It surprised me that I so easily switched my loyalty from the first book, because I usually resent that kind of thing.

Strong characters, great story and character development - even though it deals with magic, I never had any "give me a break" moments, the characters stay true to character. Read this whole series, and anything else the author writes. I'm a HUGE fan.

Rachel Morgan has an amazing talent of painting vivid scenarios and not only capturing emotions well, but realistically writing them into a story that encompasses a person's ability to relate and personal experiences. In this story there is no self-gratification, but rewards for hard work and an unrelenting drive to succeed. There's no facade of inhumane strength, but compassion and an involvement with what one might consider flawed. And it's all written into a fantastic fantasy realm filled with endless adventures. Every beautifully painted scene of the Faerie realm can be found in this series. The graphics are not only easily visualized, but simple, leaving room to focus on the action at hand. No matter how many times I've read the Faerie Prince I am always left in a state of awe. It is my favorite in this series. One of my all time favorites period. The direction the author takes with Ryn and Vi's friendship leaves me down right giddy. I am hopelessly addicted to the Creepy Hollow series.

About the Author
Jan De Spiegeleer (Geneva, Switzerland) is Head of Risk Management at Jabre Capital Partners, a Geneva-based hedge fund. He developed an extensive knowledge of derivatives pricing, hedging and trading while working for KBC Financial Products in London, where he was Managing Director of the equity derivatives desk. Prior to his financial career, Jan worked for ten years as an officer in the Belgian Army, and served in Iraq.

Wim Schoutens (Leuven, Belgium) is a research professor in financial engineering in the Department of Mathematics at the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium. He has extensive practical experience of model implementation and is well known for his consulting work to the banking industry and other institutions. Wim is the author of Lévy Processes in Finance and Lévy Processes in Credit Risk, and co-editor of Exotic Option Pricing and Advanced Lévy Models all published by John Wiley and Sons. Too many errors and omissions in calculations

The book has too many egregious errors in the formula used for various calculations. For starters, when calculating the greeks, the author calculates some of them in fractions and some of them in percentages but doesn't indicate a % next to calculations that are percentages. Calculation for Present Value of a risky bond is wrong. The starting equation for deducing λ is also wrong. Having wasted a whole bunch of time identifying and correcting these errors, I refuse to read this book any further. I've simply wasted my time and money on this book. For the records, this is not a matter of me taking note of errata. This is sloppy work on the part of the author and the editor of the book.

Not really a cookbook

I was thinking this would be a typical cookbook where an experienced programmer could quickly get up to speed on a topic by reading through recipes, which has always been in my experience, a bunch of different short, discreet and concise code samples.

Unfortunately, this book has samples that are wordy and tie together with each other. I felt like I already got this from Unity3D's free tutorials and was looking for more depth.

I think it's hard for an author to hit the sweet spot with an audience like Unity though, since many of its users come from so many different backgrounds. However, Mr. Murray should probably remove "cookbook" from the title.

Overall, not a bad book, but not as expected either.

Good Book - terrible eBook formatting.

The content is good. I find the topics at the right speed for experienced developers needing to understand unity game development.
My two star rating relates to the kindle version of the book. You need to pan and zoom to read the page. I much prefer standard kindle format where i can read with one hand.

If you want to offer this format, it should be optional; there should be a kindle optimized version available as well.

but I love this book

Since this book is new I wanted to get my review up since their are mixed reviews already. I have not finished the entire book, but I love this book. It feels like a well versed lecture in many ways in a class I would be very excited to attend. I ask my Java/C#/C++ teachers about ideas on how to implement ideas and I've never gotten straight answers, they avoid the subject in some ways because they've never developed the types of games and interactivity I'm making.

I like it because it feels like an intermediate programming book. We jumped straight to classes, having a public class and making it have private members. Standards of programming but he also addresses global variables in some situations and other ways to pass data. It's very focused on having portable code so by saying that (I would have a lot of Professors jump down by back about globals or other ideas) the author makes design decisions, which I've also had to make on my own but it feels good to see how another programmer went through some of the same steps and he is much more experienced.

This already has me understanding Inheritance in a more applicable way than I ever have before although I've worked with this topic many times.

I'm excited to keep reading and I'm glad there is finally a book that doesn't go step by step C# Programming because I've been working with this language and programming for years now.

I'm glad someone wrote a Cookbook for Unity and a book that really gets into game code design while forcing me to really see it in action.

I'm using Unity's API along with this to cover the Unity specific basics. You can't get far in any language I feel as a student without applying the documentation they provide on how their API breaks down. Unity has a great guide too on this.

So thankyou for writing a book that understands I'm not brand new to programming and a lot of detailed information in some basic concepts would not make this a Cookbook. He gives good explanations of some more advanced topics in programming (what I see as) that have been explained to me before but I finally get to see in action in ways that help me understand game programming even more.

By game programming we all know that this is working with Unity so I obviously don't mean a book on how to build an engine.

I hope this helps someone in their choice if they're on the fence. If I was new to programming I would definitely read other C# books first to really understand what is happening in this book. I don't think things would be clicking in my mind like they are if this is my first crack at the subject. C# 5.0 For Dummies was a good reference for me when I worked out of Visual C# 2012, and C# 5.0 in a Nutshell as a reference really helped me put into place some classes as I go forward.

That being said I hope everyone buys this book so authors keep writing books like this one. He is pulling everything together.

I will edit this once I finish the book or if something changes a lot.
