The real helper!

I have studied CPCU ARe 144 with this core review Are 144 and I used the review notes and course guide as well.
However, the core review was used primary to review core concepts and to practice story and multiple questions.

The strength of this book is that every chapter is quite intuitive and very well-summarized.
Especially, compare to both review notes and course guide, where most chapters are complicated,
this book absolutely gives you heaps of comfort and pretty easy to get through.
Actually, the Core Review has helped to prepare me for the real ARe 144 exam for sure.

I also like intuitive explanations and outline form of this book and how the author refers exam candidates
to briefly summarized charts and tables to help understanding.

I would highly recommend this Core Review for anyone who is planning to take ARe 144 exam.

About the Author

Thomas S.Y. Ho,is president of Thomas Ho Company. Previously he was Executive Vice President of BARRA, Inc. He founded GAT, a financial software company that had over 200 institutional clients globally. He served as a professor in finance at New York University's Stern School of Business. He is an associate editor of the Journal of Investment Management, International Journal of Theoretical and Applied Finance, and Journal of Derivatives. He received his Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Pennsylvania. Sang Bin Lee, is a professor of finance at the School of Busines Administration, Hangyang University in Seoul, Korea and President of the Korean Securities Association. Previously, he was an assistant director Ministry of Finance, Korea and an Independent Director and a member of Risk Management Committee, Hana Bank. Currently, he serves as a member of Primary Dealers Screening Committee, Ministry of Finance, Korea and a member of Unfair Trading Examination Committee, Financial Supervisory Service, Korea. Professor Lee received his Ph.D. in Finance from New York University's Stern School of Business. Dr. Ho and Professor Lee have published extensively in major journals. They are the authors of the Ho-Lee Model, the first and widely cited arbitrage-free interest rate model.

The lattice pricing sections are excellent

The reviews of this book seem to fall into two categories: those that are suspect and those that are harsh. I have at least another partial perspective to contribute.

I originally read parts of this book to help with graduate school homework. I am in a computational finance masters degree program and I spend a lot of money on books as it is. But I would definitely consider buying this book. I recently had to solve a homework problem on using lattice pricing to price a "Chooser option" (sometimes called an as-you-like-it option). This option can be converted to a put or a call at some time T. I wrote software that properly generated the strike price, and the call and put prices in the lattice. But I was not sure what the next step was. This book has an very readable very good section on lattice pricing of Chooser options. After reading this I was able to finish the software and get the right answer. Google limits the amount that you can see, but looking over other material it looks like there are other excellent sections on lattice pricing for other instruments.

So having read through some of this book I can attest that at least some sections are excellent. Fortunately you can take a look at the book, either on Amazon or Google and decide for yourself.

I have since bought a used copy of this book to help round out Hull for my options and derivatives class.

Brilliant educational project

Most textbooks on financial modeling are devoted to describing specific models, such as those for stocks, bonds, or options, or to their specific applications such as arbitrage trading and portfolio management. Few books describe the financial principles behind the models and tie the models to business solutions.
The Oxford Guide to Financial Modeling by Thomas S.Y. Ho and Sang Bin Lee (yes, the authors of the Ho-Lee model, the first arbitrage-free interest rate model) successfully ties the thought processes and applications of the financial models together and describes them as one process which provides business solutions. The authors very ably explain all the models used in finance, take the financial theory and modeling to the next level and develop a business model framework that integrate the fields of corporate finance, fixed income, derivatives, and Asset & Liability management.
Each chapter begins by introducing a practical problem. The financial models that provide solutions to the problem are then described. The chapter concludes with how the models can be applied. Because of the nature of the material on financial models, the book presents many results as mathematical formulations, yet the text is very enjoyable as the more rigorous mathematical derivations are deferred to the appendices and to the epilogue.
What really makes The Oxford Guide to Financial Modeling a brilliant educational project and just not another excellent textbook is the companion web site that serves as an interactive workbook designed specifically for the book. The site is designed to further enhance understanding of the use and applications of the models referred to in the book and it is accessible free of charge.

The field of quantitative financial modeling, young as it is, has seen a massive explosion of published books in recent times. While it may appear that there is now a wealth of literature on financial modeling out there, the sad reality is it has become very difficult to find well-written comprehensive books. Dr T. S. Y. Ho and Prof S. B. Lee's book is in my opinion the most comprehsive book on financial modeling since J. Hull's book. Their book even takes a big step further than John Hull in setting a mathematical framework for consistent valuation of derivatives, corporate liabilities and valuation of firms (Corporate Finance).

This is a an excellent book for researchers, practitioners and students alike. Readers will benefit from a wealth of academic and industrial experience of the two authors, which is very well portrayed in every section of the book. In addition to the book they provide a free interactive website ([...]) where one can be more intimate with the financial models discussed in book. One may recall that Dr Ho and Prof Lee are the authors of the Ho-Lee model.

Quality photos, Shallow content

I was under the impression that this book would cover a larger portion of the Orient. Thailand, Korea and Japan are not included at all, it solely focuses on the work of Chinese artists. Additionally, there is no text at all to give insight into the themes or styles your are seeing in the book. I thought something called a "Sourcebook" would have explanations of cultural themes and design. While that is disappointing, as other reviews have mentioned the quality is very good, both in photo content and physical construction. I considered returning it because of my misunderstanding, but after flipping through it I decided it is worth keeping as a coffee table book.

Excellent Introduction to Data Center Networking

I keep a list of "recommended reading" books to give to clients and students. Someone pointed me to this book and said it should be on my list, so I bought a copy. Within just a few chapters I knew this one would be near the top of my list. Santana explains the fundamentals in a clear, well-organized, personable, and often funny style. If you are starting out in networking and want to understand the unique challenges of data centers, this is the place to start. Well done, sir!

Awesome Book

I've been looking for Data Center material that could help me getting in touch with these technologies for such a long time. I've always felt the DC world was too advanced for me because of the distinct protocols and the lack of readings for beginners. This book takes us from VLANs to Cloud Computing in an engaging and logical way. I especially enjoyed the "evolution" chapters because of the vendor-independent concepts concerning networking, storage, and server technologies. Great read!

Fantastic Design Book

I found this book to be easier to read than most Cisco Press books. It's well written. This book is very useful for understanding how new visualization techniques work and where they fit into your network. The book is great on its own, but I would also recommend it if you plan on buying the NX-OS and Cisco Nexus Switching book. It gives much of the context and background information that seems to be lacking from 'NX-OS and Cisco Nexus Switching'.

About the Author
Curt M. White is an associate professor in the College of Computing and Digital Media at DePaul University, where he has been since 1988. Currently in his 37th year of teaching, he previously taught at Wayne State University, Illinois State University, Purdue University-Fort Wayne, and Dominican University. Dr. White has published more than 30 articles on computer science and computer science education, two chapters in books, and two college textbooks. In 1997, he chaired the ACM SIGCSE's national conference on computer science education and more recently served as president of the Consortium for Computing Sciences in Colleges. He completed a bachelor's, master's, and Ph.D. in computer science from Wayne State University.

Don't buy this book!

While comprehensive and covers almost everything networking, it lacks in a sufficient number of ways to only give it 1 star.

1. It completely lacks references. None. Zip. Nada. I've been penalised for my assignment not having in-text referencing for this very subject, yet the Uni found it perfectly acceptable to use this text which is a complete plagiarism from cover to cover.

2. Technically inaccurate:
2.1 Page 233: Thin clients download software from servers. Really???
2.2 Page 233: You can't plug in CD or DVD disks into a thin client - maybe 20 years ago, but not anymore.
2.3 According to the author we ran out of IPv4 addresses. Well, according to publicly available estimates there are still IPv4 addresses available and estimates say that AFRINIC will run out of addresses in 2016.
2.4 Page 344: According to the author honeypots are a physical data protection method.
2.5 Page 344: According to the author intrusion detection is a form of surveillance, again, a physical protection method, which "electronically monitors data flow".
2.5 Page 247: Messages transmitted across a WAN hop from "workstation to workstation". A station can even be a mobile phones.

3. Weird language: Page 285: It explains in detail IP packet headers, but it falls short of properly explaining NAT. Instead, the student is told that NAT uses "phony" IP addresses.

4. While some of the explanations make sense in isolation, by completely ignoring the context, it has a completely different meaning when considering the bigger picture. There is a complete lack of effort to put things into context on the author's part.

And the list goes on.

To me it looks like this book was quickly thrown together, rushed out of the way to meet deadlines. No serious regard to quality or content.

And, by the way, I bought this book in June 2012, wrote this review in October 2012, but the book is copyrighted in 2013. It came back from the future!

Avoid this book at all cost.

Decent enough book, but dated

It still talks about hubs in this book, which seems crazy to me. I haven't seen hubs in action in over 5 years. But then it somehow mentions brand-new technologies like Zigbee and 10G. It's all over the map and the editing is probably where it needs to be improved. Perhaps they just add material and never take any out.

Technically Accurate.

I am currently using this book in an ISM class. While it is a technically accurate text and easy to follow, I found the author to be a bit over-the-top with their use of sexual euphemisms.
