Martin Birtill, Richard Hallows and Mark Unwin are all current or former tutors at in the English Language Centre at London Metropolitan University, with experience of teaching IELTS and Study Skills on Foundation/Pre-sessional courses. Martin Birtill: MBA, RSA Diploma. Martin has been in EFL for eighteen years, as a teacher and as the Marketing Director for the British Council in Milan for 5 years. He has also set up and run a Language School in London for 5 years with clients from the major banks and institutions in the City. In the last 4 years Martin has been working at London Metropolitan University teaching IELTS and study skills/EAP on Pre-sessional courses.

I'd say get this to at least teach about other cultures and to give your children an idea of what other countries are like, but

Compared to now, this is far outdated. I bought this to teach my sons about the world, and for that it serves its purpose very well. Our family reads through it and then prays together for each country we read about or people group. There are loads of colorful pages with information. I'd say get this to at least teach about other cultures and to give your children an idea of what other countries are like, but if you are trying to teach history from it, see if there is a newer version with updated information instead.

Great for Homeschoolers of all Ages

We bought this book as part of our Sonlight homeschool curriculum. It's my favorite of the year. Each double page spread focuses on a different county or people group. The photos are amazing and the stories are short and hold my kids'(age 4, 6 & 8) attention. We use the maps included along with our own wall map to learn where each place is in the world.

By far though, our favorite part is the list of suggested prayers for each people group or country. Since the school year started, our family has been able to pray for people all over the world, some of which we didn't even know existed before we read this book. My four year old still often prays for the "kids who live in the sewers" as those pages particularly touched his heart.

Be warned that this book may spark some hard discussions with your children. My kids have asked many questions: easy ones about what different religions believe (the back of the book has a great resource for describing the main religions of the world)and really hard ones like "Why would that person's family kill them if they became a Christian?" or "How can we help kids who live in the sewer?"

The only issue I have is that the edition I have is about 10 years old, and as with any geography book, some things have changed in that time. When we covered Iraq, for example, the had listed Saddam Huessien as the leader of the country. It wasn't a huge deal for me, because I knew enough about that country to update the kids.

I was slightly disappointed in its condition

Yes, it is what i hoped it would be. I was slightly disappointed in its condition. I think the packaging material broke a couple of inches of the spine o book. The front page was torn from the binding about 2 inches. But it is the book i thought it would be. Thanks.

The person who held the aforementioned office with the tongue-twisting title was none other than Niccolò Machiavelli, who, suddenly finding himself out of a job after 14 years of patriotic service, followed the career trajectory of many modern politicians into punditry. Unable to become an on-air political analyst for a television network, he only wrote a book. But what a book The Prince is. Its essential contribution to modern political thought lies in Machiavelli's assertion of the then revolutionary idea that theological and moral imperatives have no place in the political arena. "It must be understood," Machiavelli avers, "that a prince ... cannot observe all of those virtues for which men are reputed good, because it is often necessary to act against mercy, against faith, against humanity, against frankness, against religion, in order to preserve the state." One of the most influential books of all time

The idea of "reviewing" this is more than a little silly -- it's arguably the most influential non-religious work of all time -- but I thought a few comments & historical notes might still be worthwhile.

"The Prince" was essentially the first work of political realism in Western thought -- the first work of Western political philosophy that concerned itself not with the ideal government (as Plato had done in his _Republic_) but with the practical realities of getting and holding power. To describe the impact and influence of that willingness, that first notion that conventional morality might not be the best guide to success, would be as impossible a task as trying to summarize the influence of Galileo. Napoleon is rumored to have written extensive annotations to this book; Stalin allegedly kept a copy on his nightstand. Half of Shakespeare's villains (Iago, Richard III, etc.) derive their character in whole or part from this text.

Most of this book is extraordinarily controversial, even today, yet still fundamentally difficult to argue against; there's a reason the Catholic Church kept it on the _Index Librorum Prohibitorum_ for centuries. If you're looking for food for thought, it's here.

This particular kindle edition is fairly good; the text is cleanly presented with few typographical or scanning errors, and the translator has clearly made a significant effort to present the text as accurately as possible in a modern translation, with several footnotes detailing possible alternate translations of particular words, etc. In addition to the text of _The Prince_, this edition also includes two shorter historical works by Machiavelli, "Descriptions of the Methods Adopted by the Duke Valentino When Murdering Vitellozzo Vitelli, Oliverotto da Fermo, the Signor Pagolo, and the Duke di Gravina Orsini," and "The Life of Castruccio Castracani of Lucca." ("Duke Valentino" is an alternate name for Cesare Borgia). Both additional texts are, in essence, case studies of how contemporary historical figures achieved success by acting according to the precepts which Machiavelli outlines in the main body of the text, and as such are very useful and interesting companion reads.

Introduction to basic political manipulation.

I decided to buy the Prince along with the Art of War and The Book of 5 Rings as a set, since these works have a reputation for helping people understand the ways of war and power. Of the three, I would say that the Prince holds up the best in our modern time. Machiavelli's lesson on how to gain and maintain power are fairly basic, but still important. Niccolo uses a lot of examples of other rulers, particularly from Italy, to illustrate his points. While having a working knowledge of the history of these men would certainly make the book better, he provides enough detail to get his point across without it.

One note: After the introduction, the author of the forward includes a lengthy sample of his own fiction book 'The Malice of Fortune', that takes up half the book before you reach the Prince. I see it more as bonus content, but just know you'll have to flip a lot of pages to get to what you bought the book for.

Machiavelli's classic, now for Kindle

This review is of the (currently free) Kindle edition of The Prince.

As others have stated at much greater length and with far greater eloquence, this is one of the most important books of political thought and philosophy ever written, and a truly timeless classic. As such, the fact that it's available for free on Kindle makes this a terrific deal, worth every single penny and many more. All the usual conveniences of Kindle applies here: very fast to download via Whispernet, the handiness of being able to annotate and highlight important passages, bookmarking pages you want to reference again later, etc. The slickness of the Kindle format and capabilities plus the inherit worthiness of the book itself easily nets 4 stars.

It's been about forever since I last read The Prince, plus I don't really know anything about Italian, so I'm not really fit to talk about the quality of the translation. Suffice it to say that it's a fairly easy book to read and make sense of, but again I can't speak to how true this particular edition is to its source material.

Unfortunately, there are a few problems with this edition of The Prince that need to be mentioned, and which in the end detract a little from the overall score. The first and biggest is in the formatting of the book. In short, it looks like a plain-text notepad file converted into a Kindle book; there's no navigable Table of Contents or chapter breaks as with most commercial Kindle books, and the book itself flows from the title page almost directly into the background about Machiavelli and then from there straight into The Prince itself, with scarcely a break in the text to mark the transition. For someone well versed in The Prince this probably isn't much of an issue, but for the more casual reader it's a little distracting and may confuse some. The other problem is more one of personal preference, which is that there's no annotations alongside the text to put specific lines into context. Again, for someone well versed in Machiavelli's life and the real-world examples he uses throughout The Prince, this probably isn't a significant issue. For more casual readers, having a little context for the examples he uses would be helpful from time to time.

In the end, you get what you pay for, and as the above-reviewed version of The Prince was free, I can't complain too much. It's brilliant, it's relevant, and it's very convenient to have on my Kindle. What more do you want for the price?

Tim Giago weaves memoir, commentary, reflection and poetry together to boldly illustrate his often-horrific experiences as a child at an Indian Mission boarding school run by the Catholic Church. Through his words, the experience of one Indian child becomes a metaphor for the experience of many who were literally ripped from their tribal roots and torn from their families for nine months of the year in order to be molded to better fit into mainstream America. They were not allowed to speak their own languages or follow their traditional customs, and cases of physical, sexual and psychological abuse were common. As a result, the Mission school experience often resulted in isolation, confusion, and intense psychological pain. This has contributed to problems including alcoholism, drug abuse, family violence and general alienation in an entire generation of Native Americans. Dramatic and intensely moving black-and white illustrations by Giago’s daughter Denise illuminate the text.

"We were separated from our cultural and spiritual teachers, our parents and grandparents. We were beaten physically, psychologically and emotionally for being Indian. Our culture, language and spirituality had to be stripped away so that we could become cheap imitations of our mentors, the Franciscan nuns and Jesuit priests, prefects and brothers...There are few Indian families who have not experienced the residual impact of the abuse heaped upon their friends and family members after they were victims of the rape and abuse they experienced at the hands of the missionaries sent out to save their souls. It was not only a sin, it was a crime." (Tim Giago)

Making the invisible visible

Tim Giago has provided a poignant look into a segment of American history that few know about and others wish was not known. The legacy of Native American Indian children compelled to attend parochial boarding schools has not been a good one. Tim presents a balanced, first-hand depiction of life in a mission school and the abuses suffered at the hands of so-called "Christian" officials and staff. He also shares the enduring spirit of these Native children who survived this ordeal some of whom go on to lead productive lives.

This is an excellent book about a dark part of history. If you need a resource about the Indian Missions Boarding Schools or are at all interested in the topic this is a great book to look into. It also contains the authors original poetry.

This is a must book for Histology

I really enjoyed the book. It goes very well with Histology courses.It gives you feeling of three dimensional pictures of real cells like photography. Since it is like a photography, it shows external views not the section throughs but you get hundered times better understanding of the structures. just look at scanning electron picture examples in your typical cell books. This book is full of them and not just plain pictures but with some explanations similar to Histology books.

an indispensable reference

This is a fantastic visual reference book for anybody interested in microscopic and/or macroscopic anatomy. Most of the major systems are covered, although the tissue samples are usually taken from small mammals. The range of magnification is great, and provides the reader with a clear concept of the structure and function of a given organ.
I'm a professional medical illustrator with a library of over 300 books, and this is one of only a few "desert island" books - ones that I wouldn't want to be without. I believe anybody with an interest in the way we're made will find it fascinating.
