Scott Ciencin is a New York Times bestselling author of children’s and adult fiction. He has written comic books, trading cards, video games, television shows, as well as many non-fiction projects. Authors need somebody to help them with math.

There are good exercises and techniques described in the book, though they could be better organized. Some information given there is inaccurate: 2 oz not equal 20 grams. It's 60 grams (p.798). They claim 16 -19 inches to be 33-39 cm while it would be 40 to 48 cm. Still don't know where did they get those numbers from for newborn babies' heights. Most of babies I know about have been born between 51 -58 cm (20-23 inches) and they are not giants, just average babies. At the same page they mention that 23 cm is 14 inches while it's just 9 inches! Authors, if you don't know how to converse the numbers, please mention inches only, don't confuse people. Otherwise, students don't know which numbers you meant to be correct, it's very distracting for studying.

Great for injury self-management

Had broken arm (sports injury). I felt that my Kaiser medical professionals' explanations of injury, treatment and rehabilitation were not informative enough. Got this book and was very happy because it explains things THOROUGHLY! Am making good rehab progress because I'm doing exercises that the book shows and explains (exercises that my Physical Therapist hadn't shown or given to me).

The book is intended for professional Physical Therapists, but it is excellent for physically-active lay people who are willing to take some time and effort to learn about human physiology and some technical/medical terminology.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

I also bought Trail Guide to the Body: How to Locate Muscles, Bones, and More (3rd Edition)--another good reference book.

If you want info about your P.T. regimen, perhaps look to this older, but inexpensive edition (used) of a P.T. textbook. After hip replacement, I wanted to understand after 9 or 10 P.T. sessions just what was happening and if there were more things I could do on my own or understand better how not to fall apart completely as I approach 70. While guidance from my therapist was necessary, the reading for enlightenment is what I sought and I got it in this book. Interesting reading ...

Girl Power

I like fantasy. This is well done without dwelling too much on the past story to hook the reader into the series. I did read them as a series but I could have picked up this one a random and had a quick read without feeling like I was lost. This series is based on a young girl that trains from youth to become a knight. Of course no one knows she is female during her journey to become a knight and she does not revel her gender until she has been knighted. This part of the series mostly involves her setting off on her journey and learning her power and developing her skills while training to be a knight. A fun read and would work as part of a young reader's introduction to fantasy. No serious made up words, descriptive sexual themes, or gore.

The first in Tamora Pierce's Tortall Saga. This book introduces her first character, Alanna, who wants to become a lady-knight and switches places with her brother, who wants to be a magician, taking his place at court under the guise of "Alan" while her brother apprentices with a sorcerer. This is good YA fantasy that both adults and their children can read together.

A fun, youthful beginning to a fantasy series I plan on continuing

Confession: This isn't the first book I've read from the Song Of The Lioness Quartet. After learning about this beloved YA fantasy series about a female knight, I nabbed the first installment I could get a hold of - which turned out to be Lioness Rampant, the finale. (Oops...) But even though I spoiled the ending for myself, I enjoyed the last installment so much that I resolved to read the earlier books. It's taken me a while, but I finally bought Alanna: The First Adventure earlier this year and squeezed it in during a recent weekend trip. And I'm very glad I did!

First published in 1983, Alanna: The First Adventure chronicles the first two years of Alanna of Trebond's quest to become a knight. When her father sends her and her twin brother Thom away for separate educations, she switches places with Thom so he can pursue sorcery (the last thing his sister wants to study). Alanna then begins her charade as a boy named Alan and trains as a royal page in Tortall's capital city of Corus. Achieving her heart's desire, however, is more challenging than she had dared to imagine. Her time as a page tests her patience and her fear of her own magical powers - and makes it increasingly difficult to maintain her guise. Can Alanna manage it all without sacrificing her dreams or compromising her secret?

Accidentally starting this series with Lioness Rampant gave me a unique perspective on The First Adventure in a way that didn't spoil my enjoyment of the book. Not only does Alanna's journey begin here, but a number of characters I liked in Lioness Rampant also make their formal entrance here. We learn how Alanna threatens former knight Coram Smythesson into being her chaperone (one of the book's funniest scenes!), befriends the royal heir Prince Jonathan, and finds reason to trust George Cooper, the realm's infamous King of Thieves. And, we witness Alanna's first interactions with her later arch-nemesis, Duke Roger of Conté. Also, given what I know about Lioness Rampant, The First Adventure sparked my curiosity about how certain characters will change and relationships will evolve from here.

I can't talk about characters without covering Alanna. Because as much as I love fantasy that teems magic and action (and you'll find plenty of that here), a well-rounded, believable protagonist needs to reel me in. Pierce aces this with Alanna. This courageous young girl is fiercely determined to reach her goals, good at listening to her instincts, and loyal to her friends. Not to mention a cheeky little thing! Alanna isn't afraid of speaking her mind, which is often adorable because she views what others deem rude as from-the-heart honesty. This is exactly the kind of heroine that young female readers would want to emulate.

To match her spitfire of a leading lady, Pierce uses a straightforward, sanguine narrative voice that works well with The First Adventure. Her simple (if not scant) descriptions and plain dialogue reflects Alanna's personality and age (11 to 13 years old). It also offers an atmosphere of innocence, as if Alanna is trying hard to hold onto her childhood despite the destiny she's embracing. This allows Pierce to handle mature subjects like puberty with delicacy. She portrays Alanna's repulsion over the changes in her body so accurately, yet without an overload of details. So, not only did I sense Alanna's mounting terror about being "discovered," but I also felt like Pierce was describing my own experience - or any other girl's - with "growing up," and I appreciate the sensitivity she showed.

The First Adventure doesn't follow a typical plot or build momentum the way most novels do. It's more or less a series of adventures, discoveries, and lessons. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Readers witness every phase of Alanna's training, from her academic studies and fighting techniques, to the friendships she forges with Prince Jonathan, her fellow pages, mentors, and thieves; and experience Alanna's joys, fears, and frustrations with her. At the same time, this doesn't give The First Adventure a clear sense of direction. There's not a lot of tension between characters or external conflict, and no real momentum until the final chapter. So, when the novel ended, I felt like I'd wandered around flat land for a while before reaching a sudden, steep hill. A little anti-climactic, even though the exploration was fun.

Other comments err on the nitpicky side. Pierce's simplistic approach in The First Adventure doesn't allow for much world-building, and makes many of the supporting characters seem one-dimensional. She also has a habit of pulling the reader out of Alanna's perspective and offering insight into another character's thoughts. In other words, The First Adventure is told from third-person POV with moments of omniscience, and those moments threw me off-balance. In Pierce's defense, though, The First Adventure was her first published novel. Her writing skills improve dramatically between here and Lioness Rampant, so these hiccups will disappear eventually.

Apart the critiques, Alanna: The First Adventure really was a delightful read. This took me only a couple days to finish, between the short length, smart pacing, and youthful voice. Plus, I feel even more endeared to Alanna now that I've "met" her younger self. She might be my go-to example for a devoted, dreamchasing character from now on. I'm even more excited about continuing the Song Of The Lioness Quartet now - and if you haven't read this classic series yet and love action-packed YA fantasies with female protagonists, you ought to try it, too. Except don't do what I did. Make sure you start properly at the beginning, with this book. ;)

Dr. Thomas J. Stanley began studying the affluent in 1973. His coauthored New York Times best-seller, The Millionaire Next Door, was released in 1996, and has sold over 2,500,000 copies worldwide. Thomas followed his first book with Marketing to the Affluent, ranked among the ten outstanding business books by the editors of Best of Business Quarterly. His second New York Times best-seller, The Millionaire Mind, explored America s financial elite and how they became so when it came out in 1999. Interesting Bits and Pieces Just OK Overall

There are some interesting bits and pieces in this book, most of which are generally familiar to readers of Stanley's other books. However, on the whole the book doesn't amount to much, wavering between sociological analysis and how to while not actually being either.

What is clearly stated, but somewhat hidden is that this is not a book about women "millionaires" in general. It is based on responses to a questionaire by a group of women business owners with incomes over $100,000 and a net worth between $1 million and $25 million. Not included at all are women professionals, women who have amassed over $1 million by working in corporations, or women who might have made their money as partners in majority male owned businesses. It is not surprising that the women millionaires in this study have not departed much in their consumption or living habits from their middle class roots. It's impossible to say whether his conclusions are even mildly relevant to women who might have made just as much or more money in other ways, and who may account for a larger number of women millionaires.

There were a few observations in the book that I did find to be interesting enough that I didn't feel like I wasted my time. One observation was about how many of the millionaire women had married a type he called "Marginal Bob". (I call them losers). I have observed this phenomenon scores of times in high achieving women, and it's the first time I've seen it documented. Another was the chapter about women who came from dysfunctional families but who were still quite successful.

To me the book felt like fairly pedestrian (and not very well written) how-to advice cloaked in the pretense of scientific investigation. At least the advice is to be frugal, don't overspend, be supportive of others, pick business opportunities based on types of businesses that actually make money, be persistant, etc. At least the book doesn't pretend there is a simple overnight way to be a millionaire. I would find a meaningful empirical study of successful women to be far more interesting. I would have also preferred if he had been more straightforward about what he was really studying. I picked this book up and bought it off the remainder table, and I'm not surprised it ended up there. It just isn't very good. At least it isn't dispensing bad advice and it does have some interesting nuggets.

Hopeful, helpful, and riveting book

If you're a woman who didn't quite see yourself in The Millionaire Next Door, there's hope. Women are different than male millionaires in several important ways. For example, the typical male millionaire has married once and remains married, but over half of female millionaires have been divorced. Women are also more generous than men.
The book mainly talks about business owners becoming wealthy, but it also talks about alternatives to business ownership. Stanley profiles a star saleswoman, educators (a wealthier group than you realize), and stay-at-home women who act as managers of their "family office". He also discusses parenting your children so they can develop a millionaire mindset. Many situations are presented in this book, so you can probably find something that will apply to you.

As for helpful advice, the author points out cautions women need to consider. Women need to watch out for the "Marginal Bob" worthless first husbands. Women also often provide continued financial support to their grown children and grandchildren. This "economic outpatient care" hurts both parents and children.
I enjoyed reading this book. It was well written and thoroughly researched. I will buy more copies for graduation gifts.

Very good future ahead of me

I absolutely loved this book! When I originally read Stanley's Millionare Next Door, I was put off that all the data was regarding men (but that it is still a very good book). I was suprised to stumble on this book and am very glad that I did!

Recently, before reading the book, I made the assumption that for women, money correlates with charity. Look at Susan Sarandan w/ the Heffer program and Oprah w/ her various charity beliefs...Awesome women who know how to give back to the world.

I feel it in my bones that this book is one of the variables in my life to lead me to success. It has opened my eyes and confirmed my assumptions to obtain success. And has also provided me w/ many other aspects and details I found interesting.

This is a definite book to have in your collection if you are serious about obtaining success. Not just monetary success but happiness w/in yourself and the community/world you live in.

Easy read

The thing about this book is that once the main make character "made" it in the music field why didn't his wife quit her two jobs & join him? I found that hard to believe. I mean the whole book was about him making it in the music world. She loved his music & worked so much just so he could focus on his music.... Why did she seem disinterested after he made it? Why didn't she want to enjoy what they had built? It was just silly & I found it difficult to believe. However, I liked the ending. That seemed real to me.

This book reaches the same demographic as her other novels.

Main character has conflicting traits

I give this book three stars because it absolutely is a page turner. I think I was through the first 100 pages after a 4-hour flight and couldn't wait to see what would happen next. I have read all three of Weisberer's other books, enjoyed all of them, and was excited to begin her newest release. Her books are entertaining chick lit, like Bravo in a book. However, like others have said, I found myself disappointed with Brooke, the main character, and unable to sympathize or relate to her. By the end of the book, I was angry with the character and felt like she hadn't learned anything from her experiences.

As others have said, it isn't evident (or at least I can't agree with) why Brooke feels like she can't temporarily put her career on hold now that everything that she and Julian had worked so hard for has come to fruition. I found myself growing increasingly aggravated as she insisted that she couldn't travel with him. But, mostly, no woman that I know who prioritizes her career and independence as much as Brooke would ever stay with a man who cheated on them (especially when there are no kids involved). All it took was a sappy speech at a wedding to forgive him??? Please! I found myself completely unable to relate to Brooke, unsympathetic to her situation, and most of all, unable to find consistency in her attitude as an independent career woman.

Issues just as important today as they were then.

Take one overwhelmingly male-centered and predominantly white society, add huge portions of power, racism, sexism, a misinformed public and gross displays of injustice, and you've got a recipe for the American way. This collection of essays written at the time of the Anita Hill/Clarence Thomas hearings holds every bit of relevance now as it did nine years ago. Highlighting earlier civil rights legal battles and connecting their influence to the hearings themselves, each essayist examines in progressive detail just how pervasive--indeed, how dangerously latent--racism and sexism are in our society. How the volatile and often avoided issue of race can blind the equally volative and often dismissed issue of sexism in any race. In these essays, we are given a shockingly clear image of the circus that was the mishandling of the hearings. Explosive, revealling, and thought-provoking, this book yanks the proverbial rose-colored glasses from our collective American conscience and dares us to think for ourselves.
