Painstaking transcription, commentary a plus

Compared to other sheet music books, this one had a nice plus - the commentary by the author in front of each Zeppelin album, giving some insight as to what Bonham did, how you might think of styling the piece, etc... Not alot of words, one paragraph per song, but I found it useful.

The transcriptions show alot more notes than I remember hearing, so I went back and listened to alot of the songs and I conclude that the author really took care in being careful to get as close to possible as to what was recorded. This is the second edition, it seems, revised in 2005.

Fwiw, I am not a pro drummer by any means.

For experienced drummers only!

This is a high quality and well written book. I have a feeling the author went above and beyond to make this book as accurate as possible. One thing I will say though is that if aren't a really good drummer you may get lost in spot's. John Bonham was one of the greatest after all and his style is not easily duplicated. Meaning you should have a few years of experience in drumming before purchasing! Recommended!

Review of 'Drum Techniques of Led Zepplin'

At first glance the title is a bit confusing as this is purely a book about the work of John Bonham; regardless I was anxious to receive it. After a few early glances the only disappointment was the exclusion of 'rock n roll' yet after an initial read there was no doubt that this is a valuable resource for any drummer.
Right from the introduction the author Joe Bergamini informs and educates the reader about the man. The style of the book provides an authenticity and respect which is articulate and authoritative and sets the book up as something special. Every track has a paragraph about things to note, which adds further insight if you want to really absorb Bonzo's playing.
The transcriptions are at an advanced level which require a decent reading ability but for the diligent drummer invaluable knowledge. There are no glossy colour pics here just good honest study material, a must have instructional book that I'm fortunate to now own.

Must-have for student of Arabic

This is the book that all students of Arabic should have on their shelves! It is the most useful grammar of the written language for students at a basic to high intermediate level (most of my lecturers refer to it too!). The students at my university... have found it invaluable as a supplement to course books. The only 'but' is that because the book spans both classical and modern standard Arabic, it is not always clear whether a given word is in current use or not. As a 'teach-yourself' course in conjunction with the companion volume 'a Key to a New Arabic Grammar of the Written Language', which is how I first approached it, I think it is an excellent course for learning classical and modern written Arabic, tho' some may find it dry.

However, I would recommend anyone who wants a quick course on spoken Arabic - very different to Classical Arabic and Modern Standard Arabic - to look elsewhere.

Several people in other reviews have mentioned problems with the print: if you find this a problem, try to get a copy of the old hardback edition (1965 Second Edition) from the 60's and 70's, as the original printing is very much clearer - the current edition is just a reproduction of this earlier edition. The book is also much more usable in hardback, and lighter too.

very well written but beware print quality

i purchased this book based on the reviews here and overall i agree that it's well written and presents the grammar clearly and thoroughly. my one complaint is with the print quality. at times it looks like a xerox of a xerox of a xerox, which can be quite annoying when trying to puzzle out the arabic. [contrast the much nicer but unfortunately unvowelled arabic in Thackston's book.]
also, the exercises are of dubious usefulness, since they mostly consist of translating stilted sentences such as "The foreign traveller mounted a swift camel and escaped. For two months he drank camel's milk, and found it very bitter, because he was used to cow's milk." [unfortunately all too typical in traditionally-minded language textbooks: compare Moreland and Fleischer's Latin book, with gems such as "After the torches had been carried into the city gates, the king was able to show the lofty walls to the guests from the province who had come to learn the art of fortifying towns"!!]

Would highly recommend this book to anyone studying Arabic. Its a great tool; I've used it a lot to study the Arabic derivation patterns but this book comes packed with so much more. This book was recommended to me by my professor and I have not been disappointed!

Mind Blowing

I can't find the right words to describe the changes that are taking place within me as a result of reading this book. I think anyone who would be interested in reading this book understands that words are often very limiting when attempting to describe spiritual experiences, and the author does an amazing job of articulating what most of us cannot articulate. Every time I pick up this book, even if I only read a paragraph, I find a new gem that shifts my perception even more. If you are searching, this book will help you.

A difficult read

I bought this book after reading the glowing reviews and started reading the book is great excitement. After the beginning story of the girl who was spontaneously healed, I found the book to be getting very heavy. While I do not wish to comment on the experience or knowledge of Richard Moss, I would like to state that the writing style is extremely complicated and makes it very difficult to read beyond a few paragraphs at a time.

The topic of enlightenment is something that can best be described in poetry. Richard's work has a very high intellectual component and use of a lot of technical jargon. I bought this book to read something similar to one of my favorite book by Michael Singer called "The Untethered Soul" which was easy to read and extremely enlightening. Moss seems to be making a lot of effort to complicate a process that can be explained so nicely as done by Eckhart Tolle and Jeff Foster.

However, like I said, this book did not satisfy my expectation. I am sure there are people who love the heavy and super serious style of Richard Moss's writing. I'm just not one of them and would rather spend my time reading lighter works on the topic.

The Reality Affirmations Forgot

I read the Black Butterfly years ago. I have metaphysical leanings but feel that a lot of the New Age/New Thought movement is bogus information and pseudo spirituality. Richard Moss does a great job delineating the states of spirituality that are deeper (and quite often painful) than what the "feel good spin doctors" would ever discuss. This isn't an easy read because it will take you places emotionally that may be triggering. Yet, Richard Moss' work is profound and cutting edge. It will change your life.

Sacralized politics may be democratic, in the form of a civil religion, or it may be totalitarian, in the form of a political religion. Using this conceptual distinction, and moving from America to Europe, and from Africa to Asia, Gentile presents a unique comparative history of civil and political religions from the American and French Revolutions, through nationalism and socialism, democracy and totalitarianism, fascism and communism, up to the present day. It is also a fascinating book for understanding the sacralization of politics after 9/11.

In this important book, Emilio Gentile defines political religion as a "more or less developed system of beliefs, myths, rituals and symbols" that creates an aura of sacredness around an entity belonging to the world and "turns it into a cult or object of worship or devotion." "Gods" are one class of entities that human beings worship. However, other objects become sacred within societies. One such entity worshiped in the modern world---inspiring a cult of devotion---is the Nation-State. The state may appear as an "enthralling and awe-inspiring power that invokes a feeling of absolute dependency."

Contemporary social theory--focusing on the concept of power---demonstrates how forces "from above" impose themselves upon "the subject." Gentile puts forth a more sophisticated---psychological--paradigm based on recognition that human beings possess a desire to attach to and worship objects greater than the self. This is an essential work toward a psychology of nationalism.

Finally - a great Birds & Bees for boys

After starting with my daughter on "The Care & Keeping of You" (by the American Girl Co.), I really wanted to find a book for my son. He is almost 11, and things are starting to happen. This was the first book that tactfully goes thru all the changes & challenges that face pre-teen and teenage boys. I was very suprised at all the areas that are covered - even more than my husband or I would've thought of talking with him about. If you are going to start with this book with a pre-teen, I would just caution to either wait a little, or read thru the book yourself first. I felt it was more geared toward either a more mature pre-teen boy or the actual teenagers. I purchased the "Bloom" book for my 9-year old daughter at the same time. The American Girl book is just the right stage for her. I will be waiting a while before we start on the "Bloom" book for the same "maturity level" reasons.

You know boys that age are embarrassed to tell
you if they read something like this. So I don't
know. I read some of it and found it to be
very readable, and I feel it would be very
helpful to a young teen boy.
