A part of history told in a wonderful way. Should be required reading for all

A true classic that i had seen the series on TV before. So even though I knew the story . The book had many more details and als a section that told how he did the finding of all the facts on the book. This is a true story that lets us all know what really happened with the slave trade and I think every American should read this.. I have passed this on to my granddaughter==who I know had no idea of any of it. We all need to be reminded in this time where issues of race are still present.

Highly educational

As an African American man born in 1941 in Durham, North Carolina, I am very thankful to Mr Haley for writing this book. There are so many details about the life of an African man, before being forced into slavery, as well as the horrors he experienced later, at the hands of Christians.. I believe more understanding of black life in America (especially by whites) could be had....After such a short period of time has passed since slavery was abolished in America, is the playing field really level?

Translating an oral history to the written word is not an easy thing. There are truths and myths interwoven into a powerful story, with much to say about connections to family, to our shared past, and implications about the future. First read this in the 1970s, probably around the time that the miniseries aired. Pretty sure I was in the 9th grade. The enhanced features include video and audio clips, some photos, and a Reader's Digest article about the writing of the book.
