Two women…linked by one deadly memory.

On an ice-encrusted road in New Jersey, Tara Johanan loses control of her car and drives off an embankment. At the same moment in Palmetto Springs, Florida, in an unwitnessed attack, Charlotte Durand is shot in the head and left for dead.

Both women die. Both return. But near-death experiences are not always straightforward. Tara woke up with the voice and memories of a comatose woman in her head. And she can remember a shooting she never witnessed.

Telling the family a loved one is the victim of a violent crime is the worst part of the job for Detective Marcus Danforth. When his stepsister is the victim, and the loved ones his family and best friend, it’s crippling. He’ll do anything to uncover the mystery of Charlotte’s shooting.

Believing the story of a beautiful accident victim may be too much for him—even in the face of overwhelming desire. Even as the shadows of death grow darker.

When Tara Johanan's car goes off an icy road, she's so close to death that no one really expects her to survive. But while she's fighting for her life, she otherworldly meets Charlotte Durand, a woman who at the same moment Tara had her accident was attacked and shot in the head. Although Tara recovers in time, Charlotte remains in a coma and now Tara is driven by the memories she shares with Charlotte to find out who tried to kill Charlotte. To do that Tara meets with Charlotte's family, including her step-brother, Detective Marcus Danforth who is also searching for the person who tried to kill his sister. But passion explodes between Tara and Marcus, complicating an already twisted situation because Charlotte's assailant is now targeting Tara, and Tara also knows that once she tries to tell Marcus the truth about how she knows so much about Charlotte things will change forever between them.

The more I read By A Silken Thread the more I enjoyed it! MK Mancos does an awesome job of keeping the reader guessing as to the identity of Charlotte's attacker, all the while stoking the emotional roller coaster of emotions between Tara and Marcus. I can only hope that MK Mancos intends to write another book for some of the other characters in By A Silken Thread. Definitely a story to keep you obsessively turning the pages. By A Silken Thread has me adding MK Mancos to my list of must read authors!

It was pretty good, but some of the events causing conflict were not that interesting.

BY A SILKEN THREAD by MK Mancos.

STORY BRIEF:
On Feb 22 in New Jersey, a deer on the road causes Tara to have an accident causing her to go in and out of death. At the same time in Florida while Charlotte is driving, someone pulls up next to her and shoots her in the head. She also is near death but ends up in a coma for several months. Tara and Charlotte meet "in that other plane" while in the death state. When Tara recovers from her injuries she has a psychic connection to Charlotte and has many episodes with visions of Charlotte's memories. Tara feels compelled to go to Florida to help find the killer. While visiting Charlotte's body in the hospital, Tara meets Charlotte's half-brother Marcus, a local police detective. Marcus and Tara are attracted to each other. Tara does not tell Marcus about her visions. Instead she tells him that she and Charlotte met years ago.

Tara's personal history is that she had a few one night stands, where the men left without a word the next morning. She never had a boyfriend. She believes she is undesirable both physically and sexually. She always assumes the worst when interacting with Marcus. Tara is an artist who paints and sells her pictures.

Most of the story is Marcus investigating leads on the killer police style and Tara doing casual investigating by asking questions of people in Charlotte's life. During this time, the killer tries to harm someone else.

REVIEWER'S OPINION (WITH MINOR SPOILERS):
It was pretty good, but I had some reservations. Several events causing conflict weren't interesting for me. A good deal of conflict between Tara and Marcus was based on inaccurate assumptions about each other and Tara's poor self image. When they first met he wanted her but he believed she was not interested; but it was really her own poor self image causing her actions. She didn't tell him about the psychic connection which bothered me. I didn't see a reason for her to be so secretive. And when he discovered her journal with details of the murder, he accused her of being involved, but she didn't defend herself. Later she got a prank phone call, but wrongly assumed it was innocent. The killer's motive was weird, hard to believe, and not explained well.

I had some unanswered questions. I wanted to know why Colin did the mean thing to Tara as a teenager, and then why he sent a card to her in the hospital. Charlotte's father was exuding negativity. I wanted to know what was going on with him.

On a winter evening in New Jersey, Tara Johanan swerves her car to avoid hitting a deer and goes off the road, mangling her car and almost losing her life. In the next moment, she's looking down at her wreckage from above, certain that she's dead. Soon, she finds herself in a field and is approached by another women begging for her to find the one who shot her and left her for dead.

Surviving her near-death experience, Tara awakes in the hospital and begins her long road to recovery, but she's plagued by dizzying visions of another woman's memories and urgent pleas for help. Through research she discovers that while she was wrecking her own vehicle in New Jersey, another woman named Charlotte Durand was shot in the head while driving her car through a neighborhood in Florida and remains in a coma.

Bound and determined to help this woman find the shooter, Tara does the only thing possible: she travels to Florida in hopes that the woman will give her the clues needed to solve the mystery. What she didn't count on was falling for a man who'd send her senses reeling. Nor did she count on encountering the very danger that could send her to the brink of death. Again.

A rip-roaring, roller coaster ride of a story, By A Silken Thread starts off fast and doesn't slow down until the breath-taking, unexpected conclusion. Plot twists abound. Just when the reader thinks they've solved the mystery of the shooter's identity, they'll be proven wrong. Strong characters with a full range of emotion and depth help create a story that's fully engaging. A word of caution: do not start this novel unless you've got a few hours to burn. Once picked up and started, you won't be able to put it down. Kudos to Ms. Mancos for an fabulous read.
